Development, Welfare, and Well-being from Below: Challenges to Reporting from/of the Local
29-30 April, 2017
A workshop was conducted on the theme “Development, Welfare, and Well-being from Below: Challenges to Reporting from/of the Local” by the Research Unit on Local self Governments(RULSG) at the Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram in association with the Asian College of Journalism, Chennai during 29-30 April, 2017 at the CDS.
This joint exercise was an attempt to reflect collectively and throw some light on some of the questions concerning ‘development journalism’ in the contemporary period of globalisation which is witnessing an attack on people oriented development agenda. The workshop sessions focussed on issues like how has the opening up of economy and society to global flows affected the way we perceive of ‘development’, the ‘local’, and their mutual connection and how may we rejuvenate development journalism as adequate to our (admittedly hard) times? An equally important concern of this workshop was about the academic-journalist interface in illuminating and making sense of development, welfare, and well-being in India. Another major focus of the workshop was on the changing paradigm of development in Kerala and the status of local level development process initiated under the decentralisation project. The deliberations also produced a number of possibilities of collaborative work between journalists and academics focused on development issues, which the RULSG intends to explore.
An array of journalists, public activists and academics took part in the deliberations that spanned over four sessions in two days. Noted journalists, Shri P Sainath, Shri Sashi Kumar(also Chairman of Asian College of Journalism), Smt.Nalini Rajan( ACJ), Shri Gouridasan Nair (The Hindu), Smt. Monobina Gupta (formerly with the Times of India), Shri Sukumar Muralidharan(Jindal School of Journalism), Shri M G Radhakrishnan(Asianet TV) and B R P Bhaskar took part in discussions. Civil rights activist Shri Anand Teltumbde and academics, Prof. M A Oommen, Prof. K P Kannan, Prof. K N Harilal also participated in discussions in addition to a number of journalists from the local media and researchers and teachers. Dr.Sunil Mani, Director, Centre for Development Studies, introduced the CDS to the participants and Dr. J Devika, Co-ordinator, RULSG presented the summary report of the workshop.
