Innovation along the Value Chain in East Asia: Empirical Evidences with an application to Aeronautical Manufacturing Industry in India
CDS organised an international workshop on Global Value Chains (GV) and India’s participation in it, in collaboration with Institute of Developing Economies, Tokyo (IDE-
JETRO) and Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia on Wednesday, the 14th of March 2018. Participants were drawn from IDE-JETRO, The National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), Tokyo, Japan, Nottingham University Malaysia, the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment, the Airports Authority of India and leading aeronautical manufacturers from Kerala besides researchers from CDS itself.
The workshop discussed in detail how India got herself inserted into the GVCs for manufacturing and consequently, she has emerged as one of the leading aeronautical products exporting countries in the world. This is especially interesting when India does not have a single complete manufacturer of aircraft in the civilian area although she has one in the defence area. The main instrument that was used in inserting the country to the GVC was the offset policy of the country, which was elaborated in 2005. ms to innovate by drawing technological inputs from especially the buyers in the value chain. Dr Machikita Tomohiro from IDE-JETRO side and Professor Sunil Mani from the CDS side co-ordinated the workshop.
