Panel discussion on the Indian Economy

A panel discussion on the Indian Economy in the context of the Economic Survey 2018 -19 and the Union Budget 2019-20 by the faculty of CDS was held on 17 July 2019. Professor Sunil Mani, Director, welcomed the panel members and those in the audience, particularly the faculty members and students from the Govt College, Nedumangad whom CDS has selected for mentoring. He said that this was a forum for the faculty to share their views in the context of Economic Survey 2018-19 and the Union Budget 2019.

The panel comprised of Prof KP Kannan who spoke in general about ‘State of the Economy’ followed by Dr PL Beena on ‘External Sector and Industry.’ Dr M Parameswaran shared his thoughts on ‘Role of Private Investment’. A presentation on ‘MimnimumWage and Labour Issues and use of Behavioral Economics’ was given by Dr Vinoj Abraham. Some of the other areas of discussion were on ‘Swachch Bharat’ by Dr G. Murugan and the ‘Demographic Dividend’ by Prof US Mishra. This was followed by Dr Hrushikesh Mallick’s observations on ‘Government Finance’ followed by an extensive presentation on ‘Technology and Innovation’ by Prof. Sunil Mani.

Each of the panel members examined the revelations made in the Economic Survey regarding various aspects of the Indian Economy and commented upon the proposed budgetary announcements to that effect. The presentation was followed by a lively interactive session with those from the audience. Questions and clarifications relating to the topics discussed formed the main part of the session.
